My husband and I are planning a new life in Autralia with our 3 children ages 9, 7 and 6 months. We are in the process of doing our visa's. I spent 6 weeks traveling the Gold coast 10 years ago and had the time of my life. I have been thinking where I I would like to base. I like the idea of NSW. The idea is not to be in a big city but somewhere where has something to offer all the family.
University of wollongong
It is important to be near the coast too. I have been reading alot about the city Wollongong. I think it has alot to offer what we are looking for as a family. I would love to hear from locals or anyone that knows the area. Any advice on nice family area's to live, area's with good school's, jobs ect I would prefer the northern suburbs of Wollongong.
It isn't far from Sydney with the National Park between the two. Try Thirroul as a start as it has more practical choices in shopping and schools, or Austimer. Stanwell Park is gorgeous though.
I can't remember which northern suburb but there is one where the school is perched above the sea and has the best view of all. For jobs you can go either direction into southern suburbs of Sydney or Wollongong. Many even commute all the way into Sydney, a bit far really. However it is good to know it can be done if you need to do that in the short term. Your biggest consideration is where to find work, which is one of the reasons why so many people end up living in the capital cities.
I'm assuming you have checked out the work situation in Wollongong before deciding it's a possibility. I can't comment much on Wollongong, but another place you could consider is Newcastle everyone Novocastiran I've ever known has loved the place.
Wollongong hotels and places to stay
Many country towns, including places like Muswellbrook, Maitland, Cessnock etc. Newcastle would be my pick, really nice place these days. As mentioned above, if you do not have work available, then these areas can be difficult If you have work in Wollongong1 hour South of Sydney then this area also has incredible beaches and interesting areas close by like Jervis BayKiama. I would get my job first before thinking of these areas.
You would not want to move from the UK without having a job lined up. I'm not sure if you've made this move yet, but I would recommend the northern suburbs of Wollongong. Our suburb is Wombarra, between Stanwell Park and Thirroul and the other little ones worth seeking out are Clifton, Scarborough where the school is perched on the clifftopColedale and Austimer. The stretch through the north is between the escarpment and the ocean, so you are never far from the beaches which are always sparsely populated compared to the over-run Sydney beaches. There are plenty of schools, sporting clubs of course, and these areas are excellent for families.
We moved here three years ago from the inner west of Sydney and would never go back. The place of live is much greater than in the city. My wife works in finance so continues to commute to Sydney. It's 70 minutes drive each way so not for everyone. Wollongong is goods south. The only thing we miss about living in the city is the food. The concept of gourmet hasn't reached here yet, although there are some ok cafes. The upside is that as a work from home dad I've embraced my inner chef and have found a love i never realised wollongong in me when there was a decent restaurant on every corner.
